Recently I held a rolling town hall meeting held on a hybrid bus that is built by General Motors, but is not used here in the State of Michigan. We had it on loan from King County in Seattle. In Seattle they use 287 of these buses, and they have transformed public transportation in Seattle, Washington and we’d like that to happen in the State of Michigan, specifically in southeast Michigan. We had about 120 people attend it, experts in public transportation throughout the state, and lots of people that wanted to use the bus. ... The town hall meeting was very successful, very exciting, and we’ll be doing something just like it in the future. For those of you that attended, I thank you very much for participating.

I am happy to announce the formation of a bipartisan Public Transportation Legislative Caucus that will examine the issues related to public transportation across the state. Public transportation brings our communities together. It connects employers with employees; it connects doctors with patients; it connects businesses with customers, and it would stimulate local economies. Rising fuel prices have made it clear we are in definite need of a well-functioning public transportation system. … Much has been done to advance public transportation in parts of Michigan over the last several years, but more needs to be done. The creation of the Legislative Public Transit Caucus is a great first step. It illustrates that building efficient and effective public transit is something that benefits all Michigan residents, regardless of political affiliation. …

Preschool helps ensure that our children are not left behind in a fast-paced, ever-changing economy. In the future, it will be vital to have a highly educated workforce in order to maintain our state’s financial health. That starts with quality preschool programs.

When you look at websites belonging to other major cities, perhaps while planning a business trip or vacation, there’s almost always an icon called “getting around”. When you click it you find transportation options that seem inviting and easy to use. When you go to visit Detroit.com, our official tourism website, you find information on great tourist opportunities, wonderful attractions, and the city’s vibrant downtown. What you don’t find is a “getting around” icon. Why? Because there’s no comprehensive way to get around, and that’s a shame. That’s one of the reasons we need to improve our public transportation system in Southeast Michigan. ...

Alleviating Prescription Drug Costs

Because of the spiraling cost of prescription drugs, and the impact that it is having on Michigan consumers, the House Democrats and I are proposing a plan that will save Michigan residents up to 50% on their prescription drug costs. The legislation will allow Michigan to join the I-SaveRx program joining Wisconsin, Missouri, Vermont, and Kansas. This program, which is run by the state of Illinois, will allow our residents to buy 150 brand name prescription drugs at nearly half what they would pay in the United States. Currently 1.8 million people lack prescription drug coverage in our state. People have to choose between food and medication, and that is unacceptable. We want to stand up for our residents, push back against the drug companies, and give our seniors yet another tool to help them afford the prescription drugs they need.
