LANSING – State Representative Marie Donigan (D-Royal Oak) today announced increased aid to all Oakland County middle schools by $49 per pupil for math and science instruction and to Madison Public Schools and Great Oaks Academy by an additional $18 per pupil. The bills also will add $20 million to the state's school aid rainy day fund.
"To compete in the global economy of the future, we'll need a highly educated workforce," Rep. Donigan said. "This funding will strengthen our schools and offer a brighter future to our students." The $35 million aid package includes a $49-per-pupil raise for all middle schools, and gives an additional $18 per student to districts that receive less than $7,200 per pupil.
"Kids deserve to have equal access to quality education," Rep. Donigan said. "This package will level the playing field and create more opportunities for our children."
Other school districts in Oakland County receiving the $18 per-pupil increase are: Pontiac City School District; Oxford Area Community School District; Troy Public School District; Brandon School District; Clarkston Community School District; South Lyon Community Schools; A.G.B.U. Alex & Marie Manoogian School; Academy of Detroit – Oak Park, Southfield and East; New Directions Institute; Great Lakes Academy; Academy of Michigan; Edison-Oakland Academy; Warwick Pointe Holly Academy; Oakland International Academy; Walton Charter Academy; Pontiac Public School Academy; Academy of Waterford; Bradford Academy; Laurus Academy; Woodmont Academy; Life Skills Center of Pontiac; and Crescent Academy.
The bills now head to the Senate for consideration.
