LANSING - Taking aim at those who want to bottle up, ship off and sell Michigan's Great Lakes for profit, House Democrats will introduce this week a package of bills to fight against companies that want to sell Great Lakes water for profit or send it to other states.
"Michigan is a place defined by water - we fish, we swim, we boat, we walk along sandy beaches," said State Representative Marie Donigan (D-Royal Oak). "I urge my Republican colleagues to take up our legislation, which would give state residents a voice in determining the future of the Great Lakes."
The legislative package seriously restricts companies that want to bottle up and sell our Great Lakes for profit in other states, establishes tougher penalties for those who put our Great Lakes in danger, and gives local communities a voice in any proposals to divert Great Lakes water.
House Dems are calling for bipartisan support to create protection for the Great Lakes.
"Appreciating the Great Lakes is something all Michigan residents enjoy regardless of political affiliation," said State Representative Aldo Vagnozzi (D-Farmington/Farmington Hills) "We must establish tough penalties for those who put our water at risk and attempt to weaken our quality of life."
